Our Story
Dad Notes began with a simple concern I think a lot of parents understand: Have I shared enough before my child steps fully into his own life?
Why Dad Notes Started
In the summer of 2024, my oldest son, Peter, also known as P.J., moved from California to Pennsylvania for college. He was pursuing his education, preparing for law school, and playing collegiate baseball.
As we moved him into the dorm, I felt the weight of letting go. I hoped I had done enough to prepare him, but one thought stayed with me. There was still more I wanted to share.
So I started writing him a daily Dad Note.
Each morning, I sent a short message about something I believed mattered: faith, discipline, ownership, consistency, leadership, relationships, money, resilience, and the choices that shape a life.
Those messages became a way to stay connected across the country. They also gave me a place to record lessons I did not want to leave unsaid.
The Notes Changed Me Too
I started Dad Notes for my son, but the process quickly made me look harder at my own life.
Writing every day forced me to reflect, search, pray, study, and keep learning. Some lessons came from experience. Some came from mistakes. Others came from Scripture, mentors, books, leaders, and people who challenged me to get better.
I realized I was not only writing to P.J. I was reminding myself how I wanted to live.
What Dad Notes Is About
The heart of Dad Notes is passing wisdom down.
I do not claim to have all the answers. I am still learning too. My role is not to present myself as an expert. It is to take useful lessons, think deeply about them, apply them, and pass them along in a practical way.
Dad Notes is grounded in a few principles that matter deeply to me: faith, family, personal responsibility, growth, service, leadership, and legacy.
Wisdom matters most when we live it. A good idea that never changes a decision or an action does not do much good.
About P.J. Mellana
I am a husband, father, and leader committed to faith, family, and legacy. I am a lifelong learner who cares about growth, service, and leaving things better than I found them at home, at work, and in the community.
My family is the reason this began. Legacy is one of the reasons it continues.
For me, legacy is not simply what someone remembers about you. It is what you intentionally pass forward: your faith, values, lessons, example, love, and the way you showed up for other people.
Dad Notes Is Growing
The first book is an important part of Dad Notes, but Dad Notes was never meant to stop with one book.
The larger mission is to create practical resources, stories, lessons, and tools that help people live with intention, take ownership of their choices, keep growing, and pass something worthwhile to the people who follow them.
That work is still developing, just like I am.
Start With the Book
If you are new to Dad Notes, the book is the best place to begin. It brings the lessons together into a practical guide built around character, mindset, wisdom, daily application, and legacy.
Own your choices. Build your future. Be great.
