It Started With One Note at a Time

When my son P.J. moved from California to Pennsylvania for college, I knew I could not be there for every decision, challenge, win, or setback. So I started sending him short notes. One thought at a time. Something useful he could carry into the day.

Those daily messages became Dad Notes.

Over time, I realized the lessons were bigger than one father and one son. They were reminders many of us need: take responsibility for your choices, treat people well, keep growing, stay grounded in faith, lead with character, and build something worth passing down.

This book brings those lessons together through stories, reflections, practical takeaways, and selected Dad Notes from the year.

More Than Something to Read

Dad Notes is meant to be used.

Each chapter gives you practical ideas to think about and apply. Some will reinforce what you already know. Others may challenge the way you are approaching a decision, relationship, goal, or difficult season.

You can work through the book at your own pace or return to the lessons that matter most when you need them.

Five Parts. Practical Lessons for Real Life.

The book is organized into five parts that follow the structure of the published manuscript:

  • Part I: Own Your Choices
Responsibility, mindset, self-control, habits, resilience, and the choices that shape your direction.
  • Part II: Build Your Future
Purpose, goals, money, career, learning, and preparing intentionally for what comes next.
  • Part III: Lead With Purpose
Leadership, communication, service, influence, relationships, and how you show up for other people.
  • Part IV: Live With Integrity
Character, faith, gratitude, humility, and staying grounded when life tests what you believe.
  • Part V: Leave a Legacy
Living with intention, reflecting on what matters, and passing forward the lessons that can outlast you.

The book also includes a complete 365-note index in Appendix A, giving readers a way to revisit the full year of Dad Notes by number and theme.

Who Is Dad Notes For?

I originally wrote these notes for my son, but the lessons are not limited to one age or one stage of life.

Dad Notes is for fathers and sons, parents and young adults, coaches and athletes, mentors and leaders, and anyone who wants practical reminders about living with greater intention.

It can also be a meaningful gift when you want to give someone more than another thing. You are giving them ideas they can return to for years.

A Book About Choices, Growth, Faith, and Legacy

None of us gets every decision right. I certainly have not.

The point is to keep learning. Take ownership when you miss. Pay attention to what life is teaching you. Keep becoming the person God is calling you to be.

That is what Dad Notes is about.

It is a collection of lessons learned, lessons passed down, and reminders that the choices we make today help shape the lives we build tomorrow.

Start With One Lesson

You do not need to change everything at once.

Read a chapter. Sit with the lesson. Put something useful into practice. Then keep going.

Small lessons, applied consistently, can change the direction of a life.

Own your choices. Build your future. Be great.
